Hyperhidrosis, a condition characterized by excessive sweating of the armpits, palms, soles of the feet, and face, typically develops in children by age 11. Approximately one in six adolescents report suffering from hyperhidrosis, with the resulting psychological effects.
There are limited treatment options for children with hyperhidrosis; however, doctors can use certain strategies depending on how the condition presents. If a patient has dysautonomia, a disorder of the autonomic nervous system that controls involuntary bodily functions, the beta-blocker propranolol and a nasal spray may be helpful for hyperhidrosis.
Treatment options for children with various types of hyperhidrosis include:
- oral oxybutynin or oral glycopyrrolate
- 20% topical aluminum chloride
- iontophoresis
- 2.4% glycopyrronium tosylate in fabric or 12.45% sofpironium bromide topical gel, both approved by the FDA for children aged 9 years and older with axillary hyperhidrosis.
